Nov 19, 2013 - Outdoor Fun in Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch and surrounding areas
If you love the outdoors, why don’t you check out the Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch situated on the northern outskirts of San Antonio? This ranch is a 400-acre safari park that features more than 500 animals representing more than 40 species. This park is especially good for those who are a little scared of predators and big animals such as elephants, since there is none in this park. However, you can drive through the park and view the animals roaming freely within 3 different pastures.
Some of the animals featured here are like the zebra, gazelle, emu, buffalo, llama, wildebeest, gemsbok, scimitar horned oryx and lots more. The animals are so close that you can almost touch them. Open 365 days a year, there are lots of things to do at Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch. You can do a walk-a-bout just like how you would at a zoo to view the exhibits. If you prefer something a little more hands-on, you can visit the Petting Barnyard, where you and your children can get up close and personal to pet, feed, chase and just look at the docile species of animals here. Sometimes when there are new young animals born at the ranch, the ranch personnel would bring them to the barnyard just after they are weaned from their parents. Who knows, you might get a once in a lifetime chance to pet a baby emu or a baby llama.
Just a short distance away from the ranch is the Natural Bridge Caverns. This is the largest known commercial caverns in Texas with 65 foot of natural limestone slab bridge at the cavern’s entrance. You can view the beautiful special features of the caverns which is the unique speleotherms and other geological formations.
The deepest part of the tour at Natural Bridge Caverns is approximately 211 feet below surface. This is not a dead cavern, instead, it is alive and growing with constant water flows and drips that causes the natural formations in the caverns maintain a waxy luster. There is still a lot of ongoing exploration happening at this cavern, with unexplored leads existing in sections of the Discovery Passages in the North Cavern. Despite having unexplored areas, the Natural Bridge Caverns is tourist-oriented and even suitable for children looking to learn more about natural caves and exploring them.
Near the Natural Bridge Caverns lies the Bracken Cave. This cave houses one of the two largest bat colonies in Texas.
